Overview
Monroe had no prior interest in psychic phenomena when he began leaving his body involuntarily in 1958. Initially fearing he was dying or mentally ill, he eventually learned to induce OBEs voluntarily and kept meticulous records across three books and decades of research. He founded the Monroe Institute in 1974, developed Hemi-Sync binaural beat audio technology to reliably induce altered states, and trained thousands of participants in structured consciousness exploration. His map of "Focus Levels" (10 through 49) and three experiential "Locales" remains the most systematic first-person phenomenology of non-physical states in the Western literature.
