Limits and debate
Cayce's past-life claims — particularly those involving Atlantis and ancient Egypt — have not been independently verified and are rejected by mainstream historians and archaeologists. His methodology was not controlled: readings were given without double-blind conditions, and the accuracy of his medical diagnoses has never been systematically evaluated. Researchers distinguish his case sharply from the spontaneous child memory cases studied at UVA, which follow verifiable methodological standards.

Overview
Cayce could enter a self-induced trance state and, given only a name and location, deliver detailed medical diagnoses, treatment recommendations, and — in later years — accounts of a person's past lives and karmic debts. His 14,306 documented "readings" are archived at the A.R.E. in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which he founded in 1931. A devout Christian, Cayce initially struggled to reconcile his gifts with his faith; the reincarnation material that emerged in his readings eventually reframed his theology. His life readings described specific past lives in ancient Egypt, Persia, Rome, and Atlantis — predating the modern Western interest in reincarnation by decades.
